Although it’s meant to be the season of goodwill, things are a little different down Coronation Street way, especially when the Platts’ Christmas dinner gets invaded not only by the Websters but the Windasses too, which guarantees a troublesome time for all.
And if you’re looking for a juicy cat fight, look no further for a couple of prime candidates than young madams Rosie Webster and Tina McIntyre, who start scrapping after a jealous Rosie sees Gary Windass flirting with Tina, not realising he’s only doing it to wind up David.
‘We do end up having a bit of a girlie tussle, which is always fun to play,’ reveals 18-year-old Helen Flanagan, who’s played rebellious Rosie for nearly nine years.
‘Although it only lasts about eight seconds, we did have to do it in several takes – with a stuntman present! I really enjoyed doing it – I wanted to do it again and again!’
Away from the cameras, you’ll be pleased to hear Helen is actually great mates with Michelle Keegan, who co-stars as Tina.
‘Helen’s become one of my best friends on Corrie – we’re always having little girlie chats together on the set,’ says 21-year-old Michelle, who recently completed her first year on Weatherfield’s cobbled streets.
With their on-screen Corrie Christmas dinner ending up so disastrously, we reckoned the girls deserved a proper festive feast when time permitted in their busy filming schedule – and they didn’t take much persuading to be dragged along to Manchester’s ultra-trendy Lounge 10 restaurant…
Apparently we can expect a bit of a scrap between you two young ladies on our TV screens this Christmas…
Michelle: On Christmas Day, Gail, Joe, Tina and David are having a nice family dinner, and the next thing the Windasses turn up with their vol-au-vents and flashing hats.
They stay more or less uninvited, then the Websters come around. Gary Windass comes on to Tina, and Rosie is clearly jealous – whereas Tina’s not interested in Gary at all!
Helen: Rosie has a snog – and maybe a bit more – with Gary at her 18th birthday party on Christmas Eve.
On Christmas Day, because she’s so dumb and self-obsessed, Rosie is convinced that Tina is flirting with Gary, but all Gary is doing is trying to wind up David.
Rosie calls her a slag, which is so ironic, and she starts the fight first. They have a bit of a tussle before Kevin breaks them up – but I think Tina was about to win, really!
Helen, Rosie seems to be getting worse every time we see her – do you like that?
I just love the fact that Rosie goes from bad to worse. She’s obviously very different from me, but I get really excited when the scripts come in and I see all the nasty, horrible things she gets to say!
Rosie is also the reason why the Carla/Liam relationship is revealed, because she filmed it on her mobile – but she shows absolutely no remorse or guilty conscience when Maria finds out.
Rosie’s had some classic lines – what’s been your favourite?
My favourite line recently was when she was kidnapped by John Stape, and she was in the attic waiting for him with a big stick and she said: ‘Come on, Johnny boy, time to check my homework!’ I thought it was classic.
I enjoyed that whole kidnap storyline. The scenes did get quite mentally draining, but I love all of that – I’m such a drama queen!
Do you share Rosie’s fashion sense?
We do have quite a similar style in some ways – except when she dresses in those really, really short skirts! I wouldn’t wear them in real life, but I love wearing them as the character, it’s hilarious.
Rosie has another big storyline coming up when she talks to a journalist about her kidnap ordeal with John Stape. What happens there?
She gets approached by the Weatherfield Gazette and she completely bigs the story up. It’s really funny because she does some really raunchy pictures to go with it, which completely contradict everything she’s trying to say about ‘my hell’. Her boobs are almost out!
It’s a proper Page Three-style kiss-and-tell story – and she even posts it on MySpace. She reckons she’s starting a modelling career! Kevin and Sally go ballistic, not surprisingly.
Are people ever horrible to you in the street, thinking you’re like Rosie?
It’s weird, because some people will be really funny with you and you don’t know why. You just think, oh, don’t they like me?
I suppose it does stem from them thinking I’m Rosie, but you just try and ignore it and get on with it. It can get you down a bit but you think, you don’t know me.
Michelle, how do people react to you in the street?
I get recognised quite a lot now, and people are really nice – no one gives me any grief as Tina.
It has kind of happened overnight, though. When I was in it for a few months, I got nothing.
Then, after about the six-month mark, that’s when you start getting recognised a lot. It was funny at first, especially if I was with family or friends. Now it’s normal – but still mad!
Do you still feel like the new girl on Coronation Street?
It’s been just over a year since I joined and it’s gone so fast. I do still feel quite new but I’m also settled. I still pinch myself, and I feel so very, very lucky.
It is an amazing job and the people are so nice there. It is mad that I’m working on Corrie! I’ll never get used to it.
How big a deal was it winning Best Newcomer at the British Soap Awards?
That was overwhelming as I didn’t expect to win it at all. I was so nervous accepting it, because I didn’t have a speech prepared. I thought it must be a mistake!
A year after you first joined the show, what’s been your favourite scene to play?
I think it’s still got to be my very first scene in the medical centre. Tina just comes in and is really open and honest and cheeky when she meets Gail, then meets David straight after that and has no idea he’s Gail’s son.
I think that whole scene established Tina – she’s a cheeky little madam. I was really nervous doing it.
I actually apologised to Helen Worth who plays Gail, and said: ‘Look, this isn’t like me, I’d never ever call you things like this.’ She knew it was acting, but I wasn’t used to it as it was my first acting job!
How will you both be spending Christmas?
Michelle: My mum and dad are separated, so we normally take it in turns. I’ll stay with my dad on Christmas Eve, and then have Christmas dinner with my mum – or vice versa. I think it’s dinner at Mum’s this year!
I’m very family orientated and love being with them both. I hate winter but I do love Christmas. As soon as Christmas approaches, I get excited, I start going to all the Christmas markets.
Helen: I’ll be spending it with my boyfriend Danny Scott. We live together now anyway, but we’re really excited because on Christmas Eve we’re going to go to Stanley House, which is a beautiful country manor house in Blackburn.
We’re going to have a four-poster bed! On Christmas Day we’ll stay for lunch there and then later on we’ll go to our parents’ houses.
Michelle, are you seeing anyone?
I’ve got a boyfriend, Bradley Howard, who’s a model. I’ve known him since I was 16 or 17. He lives near me and he was always part of my group of friends. We started getting more serious in the middle of this year so it’s early days, but it’s really lovely.
Where are you living now?
I was living with my mum until recently, but I’ve now moved into my own apartment in Salford Quays. I hated the first few weeks because I was on my own.
But I’ve had loads of friends round since and I’m really enjoying it – I do like living on my own.
Helen, how did you celebrate your 18th birthday in the summer?
I went to Paris for the weekend with my boyfriend, which was wonderful. I had the time of my life. We stayed in the same hotel that the Websters stayed in and filmed at a few years ago.
Michelle, you celebrated your 21st birthday this summer – what did you do?
I hired a coach and took my family and friends to Alton Towers. And I had a fancy dress party too, which we did like a child’s party with party bags and all the girls dressed as Disney princesses!
What do you want for Christmas?
Michelle: I keep going round to my mum’s and she’s got a Nintendo DS and I’m on it for hours and hours, so maybe I should have one of those! And also The Tudors on DVD. Is that geeky?
When my friends were going out on a Friday night, I’d stay in and watch that. Now that is geeky, isn’t it? Jonathan Rhys Meyers is hot! Who’d have thought I’d fancy Henry VIII? Now we know how he had six wives!
Helen: I’m not too sure. I think it’s because I’ve always worked since I’ve been younger, and I’ve been fortunate enough to buy things for myself. Christmas for me isn’t about presents, it’s about the tree, Christmas dinner and all the tradition.
