Being a judge at The British Soap Awards and having to attend the most glamorous event in the soap calendar probably isn't one of my most arduous jobs of the year.
>But it is one of the toughest being on a panel of 13 experts, which includes the producers of all five soaps - Corrie, Doctors, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks - and having to vote in nine of the 17 categories.
And, with each of such a high quality, you'd need more than a crystal ball to predict who gets what in a turbulent year of murder, drunken weddings, rape, paedophilia, fires, spectacular car crashes and even an exploding church.
Nevertheless, Craig Gazey (daft Graeme in Corrie), Anita Carey (rape victim Vivien in Doctors), Patsy Palmer (ballsy Bianca in Enders), Jenna-Louise Coleman (murderess Jasmine in Emmerdale) and Ellis Hollins (little Tom in Hollyoaks) are just five of the many who should triumph.
But the six categories voted for by the public could be the most controversial. In the wake of Danielle's death, thousands of near-hysterical fans have urged a boycott of voting for anything to do with EastEnders in protest. Now that would be a ridiculous disservice to that show, and soaps generally. Let's hope the public will display more sense.
